February 6-10, 2017 in Accra, Ghana
The African Centre for Science and International Security (AFRICSIS) and the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS) will offer a workshop “Nuclear Security Policy and Practice for the African Continent” for specialists and practitioners from African countries. The workshop will be held in Accra, Ghana, on February 6-10, 2017. Funding for this workshop is provided by the UK Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy and the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
The major objectives of the workshop are to raise awareness of nuclear security risks and threats and how they are pertinent to the African continent; examine international nuclear security norms, guidance and implementation practice; contribute to cooperation among nuclear security stakeholders in the region and with international experts; help bring African voices into the global debate; and identify practical measures to enhance nuclear security in Africa. The workshop program will feature regional and international experts and practitioners from academia, national governments, and international organizations.
Workshop organizers welcome applications from government representatives, including diplomats; staff members from parliaments; specialists from energy and trade ministries; experts in the area of strategic trade, customs, and border controls; operators and technicians from atomic commissions and regulatory bodies; specialists from cancer treatment and other medical facilities using radioactive sources and materials; journalists and reporters from media outlets; and faculty and researchers from academia. Eligible candidates are nationals of African Union Member States who reside and work in Africa, and who are fluent in English. For more information, download the flyer.
This is a tuition-free workshop which also offers travel and accommodation support for selected participants. To be considered for the selection, interested individuals should submit an online application. The deadline for applications is December 30, 2016, but candidates are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Successful applicants will be notified by January 10, 2017.
