Mr. Simon Adu
Research Scientist
Simon Adu holds a B.Sc. in Physics (Hons) from the University of Cape (2005, Ghana), an M.Phil. in Radiation Protection from the School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (2008, Ghana), and a Ph.D. from the University of Ghana. Parallel to his nuclear safety officer position at the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Ghana, he is also a lecturer at the Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Science. Prior, he was a research scientist at the Radiation Protection Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission since 2009 where he also teaches a nuclear safety and security course since 2011. Furthermore, he is been involved in the IAEA/KCL professional development course on nuclear security.
Mr Adu has participated in numerous nuclear safety and security training programs, including the IAEA Workshop on Synergy between safety and security of research reactors in Vienna, the professional development course on nuclear security education at King’s College London, the IAEA-ICTP International School on Nuclear Security in Trieste, and IAEA International workshop on Developing Safety Infrastructure for a research reactor in an emerging nuclear power state in Illinois. Other trainings include IAEA interregional workshop on Regulatory Authority Information System (RAIS) in Vienna, international training course on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Materials and nuclear facilities in New Mexico, and IAEA Regional training course on Physical Protection of Research reactor in Cairo.
Mr Adu’s research interests include nuclear security, reactor safety and HEU minimization. He was the technical nonproliferation and disarmament Fellow to the United Kingdom – Norway Initiative at the Centre for Accelerator-based Research and Energy Physics in 2012 where he initiated modelling study on nuclear reactor core conversion feasibility from HEU to LEU to strengthen HEU minimization efforts in Africa. He is a member of the World Institute of Nuclear Security (WINS) and International Network of Emerging Nuclear Specialists (INENS).
