On 7-18 July 2014, about 40 scientists, engineers, economist and policy experts from academia, public and private entities in Ghana and Africa who are involved or interested in the field of space or satellite application services will gather in Ghana’s capital city Accra for the Pan-African Space Education Module. The module, which is first of its kind in Africa, is a two-week rigorous educational program that engages participants in solving real world problems in Africa using space technologies and guided by experienced professors and professionals. Other course development partners include the Scientific Preparatory Academy for Cosmic Explorers based on the Isle of Man in the British Isles, All Nations University College Intelligence Systems Laboratory in Ghana, and the Ghana Space Science and Technology Institute Remote Sensing Unit.
One objective is to develop participants’ technical and communication skills and ability to work in intercultural and interdisciplinary teams. Another objective is to teach candidates about the proper level of modelling and analysis required to better understand Africa’s challenges and address them. The benefits are cross cutting. Participants acquaint themselves with the design process and familiarize themselves with space technologies and methods useful in tackling developmental and security challenges in Africa. Through the use of state-of-the art technologies, productivity and service quality is enhanced.

The African Center for Science and International Security is an independent science-based non-profit organization, in partnership with Ghana Atomic Energy Commission. The Center envisions a safer, more secure and more stable Africa that is obtaining maximum benefits from dual-use science and technology in fields including nuclear and space science and technology. Working with African states, partners, agencies, industry, academia and other organizations, the Center’s focus is providing rigorous-objective research, policy-oriented technical training, evidenced-based analysis, and practical policy recommendations that are essential to devise innovative and effective solutions for national and international security issues related to nuclear and satellite applications in Africa.
One of the core activities of AFRICSIS is the Pan-African SPACE Education Module through which the Center is engaging scientists, engineers, economist, lawyers and policy experts across Africa to enhance understanding of Africa’s developmental challenges and change perception on ways to addressing them using space techniques and remote satellite services.
