From July 18-22, NSSPI Director Dr. Sunil Chirayath traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee to take part in a nuclear safeguards curriculum development workshop for university professors from Nigeria and Ghana at the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The workshop was sponsored by the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration’s International Nuclear Safeguards Engagement Program. The program aimed at introducing the faculty to materials and approaches for integrating nuclear safeguards programs into existing university curricula and certificate programs. Chirayath was one of several representatives from U.S. universities who presented safeguards-related curriculum from their home institutions to the group. The participants, in turn, provided information and updates on the current state of their security and safeguards curricula and their future plans. The participants will continue to work with faculty from U.S. universities to develop and implement educational and certificate programs in nuclear security and safeguards in the near future.
